Thanks for a wonderful article on Earl Lloyd. I was 14-15 years old when I became interested in the Nats. The motivation was to be able to have a conversation with my girlfriend's brother; he was a Nats fan.
Little by little she and I started listening to Jim McKechnie broadcast the games . I think it was WSYR radio.
I am now 75 so memory may be sketchy. I started keeping score of every game for almost 3 years. I missed one because I had to go to the Prom so Jim sent me a copy.
Red Parton wrote a sports column for the Herald and I used to cut all the articles out and paste them in a notebook.
I recently met Red's son and he will get all those articles when I FIND them. Am moving to a new home soon after 52 years in this one so I hope I find them.
He told me that when they won the championship,the celebration party was held at Red Parton's house.
BUT I do remember the Championship game for 54-55 Season. Think it was Easter. April 10th. Of course we had a seat in the nose bleed section and almost had one from screaming and cheering so much.
One thing I'm surprised that wasn't mentioned was Jim Tucker either saved someone from a fire in the Eastwood section of Syracuse or discovered it in time. Fuzzy on this one but there was a fire that he was a hero. Had to be around 54-55.
I remember getting Wilt Chamberlain's autograph in his rookie year and I asked if he was really 7 feet tall. He said: No ... 6'11 3/4".
